Invasive Aquatics

While some of us spend lots of time at Nicatous and some of us only spend a few weeks a year, we are all bound by our love of the lake and the financial investment that we have made on our properties. By following a few simple procedures, we can save our lake for future generations.

PREVENTION is the only effective way to control these destructive plants!

Invasive aquatic plants are a real and serious threat to Maine's lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. These alien plants are not native to Maine waters. When introduced, they out-compete beneficial native plants, spread rapidly, and interfere with navigation
A small piece of just one plant can infest an entire lake!

How do they spread?Boaters: Remove All Plants Sign
Boating activity is the primary way in which plants spread from one waterbody to another. Plant parts carried on boats, motors, trailers, and fishing gear from an infested water body to one that is not, can lead to disaster. Plants can survive out of the water for days. Once introduced to a water body they can spread rapidly and become a major nuisance. There is NO known METHOD of eradicating invasive aquatic plants once they have become established. Maine is now the only state where most of these plants have not been identified.

What can I do?

  • CHECK and REMOVE all plants and plant parts from boats, motors, trailers, and fishing equipment before and after launching.
  • DISPOSE of plants in a trash receptacle or away from the water on high, dry land.
  • AVOID driving, paddling or swimming through any plants.
  • HELP to inform and educate boaters at public boat landings.
